A tense standoff in Boxborough, Massachusetts, concluded on Wednesday afternoon without casualties, as a man accused of assault was taken into police custody, multiple sources report. The standoff began around midday when authorities were called to a domestic dispute at a home on Hill Road, where a male suspect had barricaded himself inside and was suspected to be armed.
Following a standoff that extended for several hours, the unnamed suspect was arrested and is facing charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault on a family member according to WHDH. During the incident, residents were instructed to avoid the area and remain indoors while police, equipped with tactical gear such as helmets, gas masks, and long guns, swarmed the suburban neighborhood.
"It's very quiet here, I'm very surprised," resident Leslie Hogan told WHDH, as the typically tranquil streets were disrupted by the day's events and speaking about the gravity of domestic violence, which sadly underpinned the incident. Further insight into the tactical aspect of the standoff was provided by Patrick Sweeney who recounted to WHDH how he assisted law enforcement by detailing the layout of the building constructed by his grandfather; he voiced his concern during the incident saying, "I hope that the individual complies with them and it ends safely."
The Boxborough Police's efforts were supported by the Fire Departments of Boxborough, Stow, Acton and the Massachusetts State Police Special Tactics and Operations Team, and SWAT vehicles were called onto the scene and Matt Peculis, an area resident, reported hearing police intercom announcements intended for the suspect, Boston 25 News reports. Chief John Szewczyk lauded the successful conclusion to the standoff, crediting the joint operation that led to the arrest, and informed the public that the scene was cleared with Hill Road reopened.
