Pleasant Hill Police Department reported an arrest in connection with two incidents where the front door glass of the local Ace Hardware was found shattered. On December 21, 2023, and again on January 3, officers responding to the store found the damages, which they ascribed to shots fired from a BB gun.
The suspect, identified as Joseph Gardemeyer, 40, of Brentwood, allegedly took his irritation out on the storefront causing "thousands of dollars of damage," according to a Facebook post by the police department. The Pleasant Hill PD's sleuthing led to Gardemeyer's arrest on January 3, following the second vandalism incident.
Gardemeyer's motive appears rooted in frustration over Ace's return policy, though no further details about his grievance were disclosed. Following his apprehension, Gardemeyer was booked into county jail facing felony vandalism charges, the department's social media update states.
