Investigators in California are making a renewed plea to the public, hoping to finally put a name to the last unidentified victim of serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, infamously dubbed the 'Happy Face Killer.' According to a FOX26 Houston report, the woman known only as "Claudia" has been one of eight victims whose identity has remained a mystery for decades.
Senior Investigator Ebony Caviness of the Riverside County District Attorney's Office expressed that, with advances in genetic testing, they’ve ascertained that "Claudia" likely has family ties in Texas. "We saw that she had relatives in Cameron County, Texas, Harris County, and Southeast Texas," Caviness stated in the interview with FOX26 Houston. Further, detectives have been able to identify her father, Alfonzo Gonzales, who resided in Harris County before his passing.
In commemoration of Jesperson’s January 8, 2010 conviction for multiple murders, the Riverside County Regional Cold Case Homicide Team seeks to bring closure by identifying the one victim still known by a killer's moniker rather than her name. The team has created new renderings of "Claudia" to assist the public in recognizing her, with the hope of concluding this long-standing case.
Per a news release from the Riverside County District Attorney's Office and echoed by a 12NewsNow article, the investigators' appeal includes a call for anyone familiar with Alfonzo Gonzalez's past relationships, specifically from the 1960s.
Keith Jesperson’s exhaustive trial came to an end over a decade ago, yet for one victim, the journey to reclamation of her identity continues. Jesperson, who is serving multiple life sentences in Oregon State Prison, boasted of his crimes with letters to the media, drawing smiley faces, which led to his nickname. The investigators vow to pursue this case relentlessly, echoing District Attorney Mike Hestrin's sentiment, "We're going to keep working until we identify her."
