Chicago police have issued a business alert for the Calumet area after a string of armed robberies targeting local businesses. According to the alert posted on the Chicago Police Department's website, a male suspect has carried out multiple robberies in the 5th District by entering establishments, brandishing a handgun, and demanding cash from both the registers and the employees before fleeing the scene.
The robberies took place at various times and locations including the 200 Block of East 103rd Street on January 7, 2024, at 7:41 PM, the 11600 Block of South Halsted Street on January 13, 2024, at 7:50 PM, and the 100 Block of West 111th Street on January 20, 2024, at 8:25 PM. The male offender has been consistently described as wearing a black hoodie, black pants, gloves, and a face mask, no other distinctive characteristics have been released at this time.
In response to these alarming incidents, the police are urging business owners and employees in the affected areas to stay vigilant, report any suspicious behavior, and prioritize their safety. They suggest that if confronted by the assailant, individuals should remain calm and try to memorize any unique characteristics of the offender. Moreover, if any witness to the incident approaches, employees should request contact information so that they can pass it on to the police who can be dialed immediately at 9-1-1.
Officials are also recommending that establishments ensure their surveillance systems are properly working and, to keep a copy of the footage in case it might assist investigating detectives. Importantly, they advise never to pursue a fleeing assailant, but instead, to call the police and provide as much information as possible while remaining on the scene when it's safe to do so. The CPD's warning emphasizes community cooperation and awareness as essential tools for preventing these crimes and apprehending the suspect.
