Residents of Chicago’s 9th District are being urged to remain vigilant as a string of residential burglaries has set the Deering neighborhood on edge this January. According to a community alert issued by the Chicago Police Department, several homes have been targeted by thieves with unknown individuals believed to be male, white, or Hispanic, breaking in and making off with personal property.
The string of burglaries, which began on January 12, 2024, involves an unidentified miscreant(s) that appears to be operating out of a silver Toyota Tundra. The police alert, which seeks to increase community awareness and precaution, pinpoints the incidents at various locations including the 3300 Block of South Damen Avenue and the 1800 Block of West 34th Street, among others. Citizens are reporting their spaces invaded, their sense of security shattered, their possessions stolen, as the offenders continue to elude capture.
In the wake of these events, the Chicago Police Department advises residents to enhance their home security, recommending measures such as improved lighting around properties, and secure doors and windows. For those with video surveillance, police urge that footage of any suspicious activity should be saved and handed over to the authorities. “If you are a victim do not touch anything, call police immediately,” the alert states, underscoring the importance of preserving the crime scene for investigating detectives.
The recent spike in illegal home entries has prompted the police to ask the public for any helpful information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators. The affected locations have been identified as residing within certain blocks including the 3500 Block of South Hoyne Avenue and the 3200 Block of South Leavitt Avenue where incidents occurred on January 22 and 24 consecutively. Further safety tips from the police emphasize the importance of immediate repairs to any home security breaches, and the shoring up of window air condition units to prevent easy access by would-be burglars.
Locals are implored to not only lock up and look out but to extend a hand to law enforcement by remaining observant and reporting any suspicious behavior. The community alert maintains, "Report suspicious activity immediately," as an essential step in combating this troubling trend of unauthorized home entries.
