Authorities have finally nabbed a Clayton County man, Charles Wise, sought for a deadly shooting that took a woman’s life and seriously injured another. After eluding the law for over a year, Wise was arrested in Nevada, bringing some semblance of closure to a case that shook the local community.

The saga began on July 21, 2022, when a dispute turned fatal in Conley, Georgia. Monique Miles, 35, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds, her life cut tragically short. Her girlfriend, Georgia Hester, survived despite being shot five times. A year and a half on the run, Wise, 71, was caught in Las Vegas, police confirmed to Channel 2 Action News.

After the shooting of the two women, Wise, whose age now 71, was identified as the suspect and charged with murder with malice among other crimes. "You can run, but you can't hide," Clayton County's Sheriff Levon Allen warned, as quoted by FOX 5 Atlanta, after the suspect's capture. The sentiment signals a broader promise to pursue justice doggedly for all remaining at-large criminals.

Hester, bearing the physical and emotional scars of the attack, expressed her relief over Wise's capture. "He needs to be off the streets," she told FOX 5 Atlanta. "He needs to be in jail, he killed somebody." In the aftermath of the shooting, it was discovered that Monique Miles was visiting her girlfriend who was renting a room from Wise when the altercation occurred that prematurely ended her visit, Miles' friends recounted to Channel 2 Action News.

With the arrest, Wise faces what seems a long-overdue reckoning. Currently held at Washoe County Jail, he is awaiting extradition to Clayton County to stand trial. Wise is wanted on charges including aggravated assault and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.
