Chaos ensued early today on San Diego's southbound CA-163 when a man, scantily clad in just his underwear and driving the wrong way, caused a head-on collision beneath the Robinson Ave overpass. According to the San Diego Fire Department's incident information, five individuals were injured in the wrong-way crash, which occurred shortly before the cracks of dawn, at approximately 3:25 am.
The San Diego Fire Department was swift to respond, reporting that emergency teams worked diligently to extricate four victims from one vehicle and one from the other, all of whom were transported code 10 to local hospitals, fighting for lives and suffering major injuries, the streets stained with the echoes of sirens and the gravity of swift judgment that often trails the reckless abandon of inebriated decisions. The incident prompted the closure of the southbound lanes, effectively paralyzing the bloodstream of the city's early morning traffic.
In a disheartening update, a video posted by a bystander on YouTube captured the aftermath of what emergency responders have classified as a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI). It was later confirmed that the male driver, who was arrested on DUI charges at the hospital, turned the freeway into a near-war zone, metal and glass scattering like shrapnel across the cold asphalt.
In total, the Fire Department's roster swelled to 27 personnel at the scene, including 1 Truck, 2 Engines, 1 Battalion Chief, 5 Medics, and 1 Rescue unit feverishly working the scene of devastation, trying to piece together something of the morning that had so violently been torn asunder.
