Former Chicago Bulls player Rajon Rondo found himself tangled with the law over the weekend as Indiana State Police placed him under arrest on misdemeanor charges involving a firearm and marijuana. According to reports by the Chicago Tribune, Rondo, 37, was apprehended after his black 2022 Tesla was stopped on Interstate 65. Officers were alerted to the car's reckless driving before the incident.
The arrest occurred when a trooper, reacting to a tip about the vehicle's erratic movements, opted to pull Rondo over and subsequently detected the smell of marijuana. A search followed, which led to the discovery of the drug alongside paraphernalia and a firearm. As detailed by FOX32 Chicago, Rondo was reportedly barred from possessing any firearms due to a protection order currently against him.
To complicate the matter further, Rondo had a juvenile passenger in the car who was later released to a family member. There was no immediate implication that the juvenile was involved in the offenses. Following the search, Rondo was detained at Jackson County jail but was released upon posting bond. An initial court appearance in Jackson County Superior Court is on the horizon for Rondo, though the date has not yet been announced.
The incident marks a sharp turn for the two-time NBA champion and four-time All-Star, whose career spanned 16 years across nine teams, including a championship win with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. His last NBA season was the 2021-22 season, closing a chapter on a largely celebrated career in professional basketball. Now, Rondo will have to navigate the legal system as well as the court of public opinion in the wake of these allegations.
