Galveston, Texas, is bracing for a major chill as ultra-cold temperatures force changes in the ferry schedule between Galveston and the Bolivar Peninsula. Beginning Monday night, the ferry will operate on a diminished timetable, running every other hour starting at 10 p.m. The change is a direct response to an arctic blast set to send a shiver down the spine of the region.

The decision was announced by Galveston County Emergency Services District No. 2, with specific changes to quickly adapt the schedule for general traffic due to the inclement weather. Despite the alterations, emergency vehicles, should they need to cross, will be able to use the ferry service. Galveston County Emergency Services noted in a Facebook post that this schedule revision is for the safety of there (sic) personnel.

According to a report by FOX 26 Houston, the region is under a freeze warning that extends from 2 a.m. to noon Tuesday. The National Weather Service forecasts sub-freezing temperatures, expecting the mercury to plummet as low as 27 degrees, impacting Galveston Island, the Bolivar Peninsula, and neighboring island communities.
