In a move to strategically enhance its economic landscape, Goodyear is setting its sights on a new hotel and conference center projected to give the West Valley a significant lift. Goodyear City Councilmember Sheri Lauritano told ABC15, “The growth has been exponential,” acknowledging the city's expansion and its ambition to become a central player in the Valley. The proposed development aims to not only supplement, but add variety to the current blend of residential infrastructure, thus attracting a broader audience to the area.
The potential economic impact of the envisioned establishment, outlined in a feasibility study obtained by ABC15, could lead to nearly $600 million in net new spending over two decades and rake in about $26 million in tax revenue for Goodyear. The development could play host to over 200 large-scale rooms, accompanied by a significant 20,000 square feet of meeting and conference space, a resource the city is currently lacking, prompting local businesses to venture out to the Phoenix metro or the East Valley for such facilities.
While the city looks to the future, The Wigwam, which has graced Arizona for more than a century, remains a historical testament to the city's past growth. Originally a vacation haven for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company executives, The Wigwam has maintained its stature as a prestigious destination and has been a member of Historic Hotels of America since 2010, according to Historic Hotels of America. This illustrious resort saw its beginnings as a humble lodging for agriculture workers, evolving, through corporate vision, from a company retreat to a luxury destination, resonating with families and celebrities alike throughout the decades.
Amid these plans, the Wigwam's enduring presence is a bridge between the city's economic aspirations and its rich industrial roots. As Goodyear progresses, city locals like Mica Messec express optimism, who told ABC15, “It’d be cool to see more local businesses come in, and small family-owned stuff would be awesome." The Goodyear initiative aims to carry forward this sentiment, fostering a community-oriented environment while simultaneously opening its doors to a wider, possibly even international, audience.
While still in the preliminary phase, the prospective Goodyear hotel and conference center, funded initially by public-private partnerships, represents the city’s vision to firmly establish itself as a geographic and economic landmark, poised to attract both visitors and investors, ensuring a robust future for the West Valley.
