A Hollywood father is making headlines after his young son accidentally shot himself with one of the several firearms left unattended in their home. Travoynne Martin Sr., who was recently released from jail on bond, is now facing child neglect charges. According to WSVN, on New Year’s Day, Martin’s 5-year-old son, Travoynne Jr., was injured using Martin's GX4 handgun, after the father placed it on the living room table.
The incident occurred when the family returned home from dinner near 10 p.m. Shortly after Martin sat down to watch TV, he heard two loud bangs and found his son bleeding from his arm, expressing regret with a "I'm sorry." Martin maintains his love and dedication to his children, saying "This is the [my son] when he graduated pre-K, and I stood in the crowd screaming as aloud as I could, ‘That's my baby,'" he told 7News. During a court appearance, the child’s mother defended Martin, stating “I just wanted to say he’s a great father,” despite the unfortunate event.
The investigation by the authorities revealed eight loaded and unsecured weapons in the Martin home, with one exception. Local10 reported that a neighbor contacted 911 after observing Martin, bloody and frantic, looking for help before speeding off to the hospital. The judge criticized Martin's decision-making harshly, saying, "Mr. Martin, please don't answer me, but I don't know what you were thinking, sir. I don’t know in what world you were thinking that having a gun right next to your son was a good idea."
Despite the father’s attachment and his claims of being a positive influence on his son, the judge has prohibited Martin from possessing any guns and from having in-person contact with his child, limited only to FaceTime communication. With their family shaken and separated after the incident, Martin feels the weight of his choices. "It’s confusing. You feel lost," Martin conveyed to 7News, reflecting on the void left by his son's absence. Meanwhile, the boy is recuperating at home, having survived the surgery for his arm injury at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
Martin, with no prior convictions and legal ownership of the gun involved in the incident, is now entrapped by the consequences of a precarious moment. Emphasizing his remorse to 7News, Martin nonetheless clings to one thing: "I am remorseful, but there’s one thing that I am not, and that’s a bad father." The case continues to unfold as parental responsibility comes under scrutiny, and a child’s innocuous curiosity intersects with the lethal potential of carelessness.
