As the Lone Star State continues to ship migrants north, Ill. Gov. J.B. Pritzker made headlines by appealing to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to cease migrant transports to the Chicago region amidst a brutal freeze, citing serious concerns for their safety. Despite Pritzker's appeals, which included a personal payment for ads in Texas newspapers such as the Houston Chronicle and the Dallas Morning News, Abbott has stood firm on the transports, a position confirmed by a spokesperson for the Texas governor.
In a stark move contrast to Texas' approach, Pritzker's plea was spelled out in a full-page ad in the Austin American-Statesman, where he directly addressed Abbott, saying "I am pleading with you to at least pause these transports to save lives," a sentiment reflecting deep concern for the well-being of the newly-arrived individuals, bracing for subzero temperatures without adequate winter clothing, with city shelters struggling to provide for the inflow, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The city of Chicago has reportedly taken in an excess of 33,000 asylum seekers and is finding ways to accommodate them, yet there is a concern for the 317 who are still waiting for a permanent solution; some 249 of them are at O'Hare International Airport, while the rest have found temporary refuge at the Harold Washington Library, CBS News reported.
Abbott's office, unfazed by Pritzker's pleas and pointed reminders of Illinois' status as a welcoming state, pushed back, arguing that Illinois' governor should rather focus on urging President Biden to secure the border, emphasizing the severe weather conditions Texas is also preparing to face, seemingly blaming the federal administration for the ongoing border crisis and directly challenging Pritzker's stand on assisting in arriving migrants during the hazardous weather.
