The weed business is booming in Illinois, as the Pritzker Administration recently touted a record-setting year for adult use cannabis sales. According to an announcement by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), sales in 2023 soared past $1.6 billion, marking a third consecutive year of growth.
Illinois locals seem to be rolling up more than ever, with sales to in-state residents surging over 15% from the previous year—shelling out a staggering $1,226,855,768.68. December was particularly green, with almost $154 million lining the state's coffers and outdoing the last record by over $10 million. However, sales to out-of-state visitors didn't hit as high, declining by 14% compared to last year.
"From day one, my administration has put equity first to build the most accessible cannabis industry in the nation," Governor JB Pritzker said in a statement. Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton echoed the sentiment, hailing the cannabis legalization as a step toward "uplifting the communities most impacted by the failed war on drugs."
These sales aren't just about getting high, they're also promising a high return on investment for historically disinvested communities. Tax revenues from cannabis sales amounted to a whopping $417.6 million in 2023, and the windfall is slated for further economic development. Caught in the mix, 177 adults use cannabis dispensaries are now operating statewide, including 67 social equity dispensaries aimed at correcting past injustices.
IDFPR Secretary Mario Treto, Jr. praised the simplified application process for contributing to the industry's inclusivity. "These statistics show encouraging progress that is a testament to the hard work by the Pritzker Administration, lawmakers, and stakeholders," he stated. The growth trajectory seems poised to continue with more than a hundred social equity applicants still awaiting their full dispensary licenses.
