The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has announced that applications are now open for its 2024 DCFS Scholarship Program offering a beam of hope for former and present youth in the state's care, providing them the chance to continue their education post-high school without the financial burden that so often comes along with it. According to a press release, a minimum of 53 academic scholarships will be awarded, promising up to five years of waived tuition at participating Illinois community colleges and universities, as well as additional financial support to cover living expenses and healthcare.
JB Pritzker, the Governor of Illinois, expressed his commitment to educational access for all students in the state, and DCFS Director Marc D. Smith highlighted the program's mission to nurture the youth beyond their high school years and broaden their horizons for future success saying, "It's our mission to provide every youth in our care with the resources and support they need to succeed through every stage of life, and our commitment does not end when they graduate from high school." Last year, a record number of 259 scholarships were given out, underlining the program's continuous growth and significance. Those interested can apply if they are at least 16 and have an open DCFS case were adopted, taken under guardianship, or aged out of the system at 18 or above.
The beneficiaries of the 2024 scholarships will receive a monthly stipend of $1,577 and a medical card, aside from the waived tuition and fees. A DCFS scholarship recipient from 2023, Priscilla, shared her experience, emphasizing the impact of the financial aid on her ability to balance higher education pursuits and personal responsibilities, "Receiving the DCFS Scholarship has allowed me to support my family while pursuing higher education. Being a scholarship recipient has also created spaces for success and connection with other current and former youth in care, where higher education has not created these spaces for us yet." She encouraged her peers to seize this opportunity for academic and professional advancement.
Selection for the DCFS Scholarship emphasizes academic performance, community involvement, extracurricular activities, and personal aspirations, determined through a comprehensive application that includes letters of recommendation and an essay outlining the candidate's educational goals. Prospective students are nudged towards applying before the March 31st deadline and can find more information and applications online, with inquiries directed to the DCFS Office of Education and Transition Services.
