An Illinois man was arrested following a tense SWAT standoff in the 5700 block of Debbie Lane in Washington County. According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the operation on Tuesday was a joint effort alongside the West Bend Special Response Team, with additional support from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office.
The situation began to escalate when the man's estranged wife contacted West Bend Police Department after her 41-year-old husband, who was restrained by a temporary restraining order, allegedly confronted her with a handgun. The suspect is said to have followed her briefly after she managed to flee, as detailed in a statement obtained by the GMToday. Following the pursuit, the man reportedly retreated to his mother's residence in the town of West Bend.
Upon locating the suspect's vehicle at the mother's home, officers made phone contact with the suspect's mother who was inside the residence. As the incident involved a firearm and raised concerns of a potential hostage situation, the decision was made to call in SWAT teams and armored vehicles for reinforcement, as described in the press release from the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
After hours of negotiation and with the surrounding areas under tight security, the suspect eventually surrendered to authorities around 3:30 p.m. and was taken into custody without further incident.
