The Illinois State Police have officially pulled the curtain off the blueprint for their new State Police Regional Campus. Located in Joliet, the facility is set to be a powerhouse for forensic science and law enforcement operations. The cutting-edge campus will host the State Police Forensic Laboratory and the Troop 3 and Zone 1 Headquarters, as confirmed by a recent release from the Illinois government's official website.
This expansion isn't just about swanky new buildings—it's about overhauling an entire century-old system to more effectively combat modern crimes like drug, gun, and human trafficking, as well as traditional traffic enforcement. ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly emphasized the need "to move into the 21st century and advance our forensic services, patrol, and investigation capabilities to better serve Illinois communities," according to Illinois' official news release.
With a budget of over $76.5 million, the campus realized through the $45 billion Rebuild Illinois Capital Plan, is expected to elevate ISP's operations by combining several services at one site. Touted to replace the Joliet Forensic Science Laboratory, built back in '64, the new lab will be jam-packed with features for DNA, firearms, prints, and more. The adjacent headquarters is also designed to streamline the processes of patrol and criminal investigations.
The project promises to be a boon to pockets in the long run. This is not just about aesthetics; it's about cold, hard cost-efficiency. Housing numerous departments under one roof is set to shave the annual expenses on repairs and maintenance of existing facilities. Kelly highlighted the fusion of "forensic testing and scientific examinations capabilities throughout Illinois," ensuring top-notch support for public safety, as heralded by Illinois' official news outlet.
Designs for the ambitious project were masterminded by RADA Architects and are due to be up for grabs this spring when bidding begins. 75,000 square feet of innovation on a 12-acre spread is engineered to bolster the law enforcement landscape in Illinois. The ISP troops and investigators, once scattered across various locations, are to unite with forensics experts to create a formidable front against crime in the region.
