The last of a trio of Miami men who admitted to terrorizing retail shoppers in a string of violent robberies has entered his guilty plea, prosecutors said. Wayne Tarpley, aged 30, sealed the fate of the robbery crew on January 24th when he acknowledged his part in the armed spree, as reported by the Justice Department.
The crime spree included a notorious episode from August 19, 2022, where Tarpley, with cohort Da’Vontae Bobby McCrae, discussed going Downtown to target jewelers, eyeing customers with "a big bag obvious money ... and follow [them] or if it’s sweet get em where they stand"; they later ambushed and robbed at gunpoint victims of a watch they had just purchased after fellow accomplice Tyreke Lafane Jackson rammed their car—no subtlety nor remorse coloring their brazen daylight plunder.
Alongside Tarpley, his partners-in-crime Jackson, 23, and McCrae, 23, are also facing long stints behind bars after previously entering guilty pleas. The group is now awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery and brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, which could potentially lead to life imprisonment.
Tarpley's sentencing is on the docket for April 23, a bit further out than Jackson's and McCrae's, their judgments set for March 25 and February 23, respectively, before U.S. District Judge Kathleen M. Williams—their futures hang in balance, the weight of their past actions anchoring them to the forthcoming mercy or lack thereof, of the court system.
