Arizona's electric vehicle sector got a jolt as Lucid Motors expanded its manufacturing plant with a 3 million-square-foot space, firmly establishing its commitment to the region. The AMP-1 facility expansion in Casa Grande, announced on Jan. 24, is part of the company's preparation to start rolling out its much-anticipated electric SUV, the Lucid Gravity. Lucid's CEO Peter Rawlinson, in a statement to the Business Journal, affirmed the company's vision, "We're here for the long term. We're making this investment; and really it goes beyond the Gravity."

The newly expanded facility, now encompassing over 3.85 million square feet, is expected not only to bolster production of the Lucid Air sedans which began in 2021, but also to quickly adapt to producing the new SUV model later this year. Lucid is reported to have sunk over $1 billion into this phase, aiming to increase the annual production capacity up to 90,000 vehicles. The company's ambition doesn't stop there, with plans to eventually expand to a staggering 15 million square feet, making room to potentially employ around 6,000 workers, as detailed in the Business Journal.

Lucid is driving innovation, touting the AMP-1 to be one of the few highly integrated EV plants in the country. “This expanded state-of-the-art plant will bring greater operational efficiency to our manufacturing process and allow us to continue to deliver our high-quality, groundbreaking electric vehicles to our customers,” said Steven David, SVP of Operations at Lucid, as quoted by the company's official release. A new General Assembly line, enhanced Body and Paint shops, as well as a relocated Logistics center, are among the upgrades introduced through the expansion.

Moreover, the move solidifies Lucid's alliances in Arizona, where it has worked to foster local talent and provide specialized training in collaboration with entities such as the Arizona Commerce Authority and Central Arizona College. With educational partnerships paving the way, Lucid aims to not only grow its brand but also to significantly contribute to the region's economic prosperity. Peter Rawlinson told the Business Journal, "We're going to put our mid-sized car in here in just a few years' time as well."

Lucid stands as a burgeoning powerhouse among American electric vehicle manufacturers, with its commitment to sustainable energy and cutting-edge technology. Its first vehicle, the Lucid Air, boasts an EPA estimated range of 516 miles, setting a new standard in the burgeoning electric vehicle market. With eyes set firmly on the future, Lucid Group continues to accelerate its role in the automotive industry and reaffirms its strategic investment in American manufacturing.
