
A man is in critical condition following a violent dispute that broke out on the CTA Red Line platform in River North late Monday night. According to the Chicago Tribune, the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m., when a 48-year-old man and a 31-year-old, after having exchanged heated words on the train, took their confrontation to the platform in the 500 block of North State Street. The younger man produced a sharp object, leaving the older man with severe lacerations on his back and neck.
The victim was promptly transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital due to the seriousness of his injuries. Found at the scene with lacerations on his hands, the assailant was apprehended and is currently under police custody, receiving treatment at Rush Hospital where, the condition was listed as fair with hands lacerated, according to the police. As authorities continue their investigation, charges against the 31-year-old are pending.
Meanwhile, the incident caused significant disruptions to late-night commuters. CTA trains were directed to bypass the Grand Station as police operated at the site. Service was halted for approximately four hours, with reports by ABC7 Chicago indicating that normal service resumed around 3 a.m. Tuesday.
With charges pending, details surrounding the cause of the argument or the type of sharp object used in the attack have not been disclosed by law enforcement. Chicago police urge anyone with information to come forth as their inquiry is ongoing. The area, bustling with activity during daylight, now reels from the shock of violence that erupted in its nocturnal stillness.
