
An armed standoff in North Austin ended without injury after SWAT officers detained a man who allegedly held his family at knifepoint. The incident began early Wednesday morning in an apartment on North Plaza near Rundberg Lane.
According to FOX 7 Austin, the suspect was reported to be in an "altered mental state" and was not allowing family members to quickly leave the premises. The police were called to the scene at approximately 4:27 a.m. after one of the family members managed to escape and called 911.
CBS Austin reported that a Spanish-speaking officer alongside a mental health officer and a hostage negotiator, tried to persuade the man to release any remaining family members and surrender himself peacefully. This negotiation lasted for about an hour before SWAT was brought in to resolve the situation.
SWAT officers then made entry into the apartment. They reportedly found the man to be combative but were able to safely detain him, ensuring that all other residents remained unharmed. "The suspect was combative, but was safely detained," according to the report by FOX 7 Austin. No injuries resulted from this high-stakes encounter.
The identity of the suspect has not been released, and charges are pending as the investigation continues.
