Illinois State Police are actively investigating the incident that unfolded at approximately 3:30 a.m. near the Paulina Street ramp to I-290, causing a wave of disruption for the morning commuters, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Responders quickly transported the victim to the hospital following the gunfire-abrupt interruption to his westbound journey, but he was to tragically be pronounced dead by 4:36 a.m., creating a deep void in the fabric of his community and family. The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the identity and the time of passing of the man, marking another statistic in the city's growing tally of expressway violence. The incident forced a closure of the outbound ramp well into the morning hours, according to a statement obtained by the WLS.
Master Sgt. Ricardo Sandoval of the Illinois State Police highlighted the intensity of the ongoing investigation. "We still have personnel on the scene, processing the crime scene," Sandoval said in a statement obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times. In the meantime, inbound lanes were not affected, allowing some semblance of normalcy for eastbound traffic. However, the westbound lanes near the scene were rendered inaccessible, with motorists being diverted onto Van Buren Street as the morning rush hour commenced.
