A deadly altercation unfolded last week in Doney Park, a tranquil residential area northeast of Flagstaff, leaving two people shot, one of whom was killed by his own firearm after returning to the scene of the dispute, armed and dangerous. According to AZFamily, the incident began with an argument at a home on Bryant Road shortly before midnight last Thursday.
The confrontation escalated, resulting in one of the individuals, identified as David Navela, being asked to leave the property. Moments later, in a turn of events, Navela reportedly came back with a gun, opened fire by the door, wounding one, then pursued two others into a bedroom as they sought refuge. "Investigators say a brief struggle ensued before someone was able to take the gun from Navela and shoot him," AZFamily reported. Navela succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Authorities responded to the gunfire around 11:30 a.m., arriving to a scene of palpable shock and distress. The Coconino County Sheriff's Office provided details to AZFamily about the second victim, who sustained minor injuries and was released after receiving treatment at a local hospital in Flagstaff. The Sheriff's Office was quick to assure the public that there were "currently no known dangers to the surrounding area."
The investigation into the motive and full circumstances of this tragic event remains ongoing. It serves as a stark reminder of the abrupt escalation that can transpire from arguments to lethal violence, with firearms too often at the epicenter of these confrontations. As the community reels from the events on Bryant Road, the Sheriff's Office has yet to disclose any additional information about the origins of the dispute or any forthcoming charges related to the altercation.
