Students at Pedro Guerrero Elementary School in Mesa are taking their education beyond the basics of math and science. They're being taught the fundamental values of human interaction—kindness. Through a project emphasized over the past month, these students have joined a mission to spread compassion with activities culminating in the creation of a "kindness river rock walk." According to an ABC15 report, 500 students have decorated river rocks with messages of kindness, which are now proudly displayed along the walkway where they enter the school each day, a daily reminder to carry the spirit of generosity in their hearts.
Meanwhile, the educators at the school are also stepping up, literally creating "grief bags" to support students who have experienced loss or trauma. This initiative speaks to a growing acknowledgment that schools are not just ground zero for academic instruction, but also for shaping the emotional and psychological well-being of our youth. Such projects are seemingly aimed to, not just simply teach kindness, but to deeply ingrain it into the fabric of every student's character.
On the same train of fostering a positive school environment, Baldy Mesa Elementary School in Phelan, California, is also championing a well-rounded educational approach by addressing both academic and social-emotional needs. An average day at the school includes a blend of independent and collaborative work among students, underpinned by a motto that the school lives by. As per their website video, the motto of "Respect, Responsibility, and Roadrunner Pride" is instilled with the hope that students will "internalize" these values.
Baldy Mesa has taken a hands-on approach to building a robust school community, not hesitating to hold unique events that actively engage students and promote shared values. These include "duct taping the principals for 95% completion on our educational benefits form," "various kindergarten parades," and "Phelan Phun Days parade participation." Events such as these are illustrative of a commitment to create a school environment where students are encouraged not only to enjoy learning but to become well-rounded individuals proud of their school and themselves.
Both schools demonstrate an education system intent to prepare its students not just for the rigors of academia, but for the nuanced challenges of the social world. Through kindness rocks and respectful mottos, they aim to nurture not only the mind but the spirit of each child, reinforcing that the lesson of humanity is as vital as any subject taught within their walls.
