Miami Beach saw a chilling scene when police discovered a young Slovakian girl shivering and alone, leading to the arrest of her mother. The child, found at the South Bay Club on West Avenue and Eighth Street, was reportedly left unattended while her mother was on a getaway with a boyfriend. The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) has since intervened, as per Local 10 News.
Pulled from the cold waters of the pool, the girl was found by a concerned worker, alarmed by her safety. With only her native Slovak to communicate, an interpreter had to be brought in by police to investigate the matter further, establishing the child's predicament. The mother, identified as Michaela Novakova, reportedly hailing from Martin, Slovakia, was absent till close to 6:00 p.m., only to end her leisure as police placed her under arrest for neglect, as divulged in a statement by the Miami Beach Police Department.
Following the arrest around 6:40 p.m. on the day of the incident, Novakova faced charges of child neglect without great bodily harm and was processed at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. During her court appearance on Monday, the backdrop of this ordeal came to light – her vacation plans included a return to Slovakia on January 14, in contrast to the unfortunate events that unfolded. Secured behind bars, Novakova's child was left in a limbo of uncertainty, without kin in Miami-Dade County, prompting the involvement of DCF and detectives with the special victims unit.
Miami Beach police are now seeking assistance from the public to piece together the details of the young girl's lonely plight.
