An 18-year-old local man was busted by New Bedford narcotics detectives for illegal drug sales, finding him armed to the teeth. On the evening of January 2nd, police arrested JORDAN JAMES of Hathaway St. following a stakeout on drug activity complaints in the north end of the city. According to the New Bedford Police Department's Facebook page, Detective Sergeant Jonathan Lagoa was conducting surveillance when he spotted the transaction that pegged JAMES as a suspected dealer.
After pulling over the young man's car, a search of the vehicle and his nearby apartment uncovered a substantial stash: about 523 grams of marijuana divided into 27 bags, 86 grams of psychedelic mushrooms, and 8 cannabis vapes, as well as scales and packaging materials. Tucked with $1873 in cash assumed to be from drug sales, detectives also found a Polymer-80 handgun loaded with 10 rounds.
JAMES now faces charges including possession of a high-capacity firearm and ammunition without a license and possession of classes D and C substances with intent to distribute. The New Bedford Police Department reminds the public that while legal marijuana is sold at licensed dispensaries, the perils of street-level sales are manifold, from selling to underage individuals to the risk of products laced with dangerous chemicals, not subject to inspection.
Tasked with bringing JAMES in, Detective Jonathan Miranda executed the arrest. As the police continue to crack down on illegal drug peddling, they encourage anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be provided anonymously through their website or by calling the crime hotline.
