Menlo Park drivers must recalibrate their commute as new turn restrictions at a busy intersection are now in effect, per city officials. In a bid to improve safety on Oak Grove Avenue at the crossroads of Garwood Way and Merrill Street, left turns are now a thing of the past.

The change, which followed a City Council approval last September, came into force after an extended median was installed on Jan. 4, according to a recent Menlo Park announcement. Motorists cruising on Oak Grove Avenue can now only make right turns onto Merrill Street or Garwood Way, the same goes for drivers traveling on these streets, who are looking to get onto Oak Grove Avenue,

Seeking to avoid gridlock and navigational nightmares, the city has pointed drivers to alternative routes such as Alma Street, Ravenswood Avenue, and Santa Cruz Avenue for Merrill Street access. Meanwhile, those needing to reach Garwood Way are advised to head down Glenwood Avenue. Public parking is reportedly available within a brief walk for patrons concerned about the distance to their favorite shops.

"There is also substantial public parking a short walk from the businesses located on Garwood Way, Oak Grove Avenue, and Merrill Street," the City's statement highlighted. The move reflects an ongoing push by city planners to resolve conflict points that have historically raised safety issues for drivers and pedestrians. With the changes in full swing, it is hoped that the restrictions will usher in a smoother, safer traffic flow through this slice of Menlo Park.
