Phoenix Police responded to the scene near 35th and Northern avenues just before 4 p.m., after receiving reports of gunfire. According to ABC15, they found one male victim with fatal gunshot wounds, who was later pronounced dead at the scene. A second male victim was quickly transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The identity of the deceased has not yet to be released, as the incident is still under police investigation with no suspects in custody. An air of solemnity was palpable as friends and acquaintances of the victims began to gather at the park, searching for answers and waiting for updates from law enforcement. A witness, reportedly in the park at the time of the shooting, was detained by police for questioning, alongside another visibly distraught individual, said to be wiping tears away as per FOX10 Phoenix.
Details leading up to the shooting remain scant, as detectives continue to piece together the circumstances of the incident. The area around the park has since been cordoned off as a part of the ongoing investigation. Local residents expressed shock and concern over the violence that intruded upon what is usually a peaceful community space.
As the night drew on, the crowd of onlookers and those mourning grew, some awaiting information from Phoenix Police, who have yet to identify a suspect or suspects. "They were just walking in the park went the shooting happened," a woman told FOX10 Phoenix off camera, highlighting the randomness and brutality of the shooting. Police officials encourage anyone with information to come forward as the quest to apprehend those responsible continues.
