In a decisive legal battle over the catastrophic wildfires that scorched Oregon in 2020, a jury has awarded $85 million to nine victims seeking recompense for their losses. The Tuesday ruling marks one of several hefty punches aimed at utility giant PacifiCorp, with the company potentially facing billions in liabilities. An attorney representing the plaintiffs, Nick Rosinia, lauded the decision, saying, "We are so proud of the strength and resilience of our clients, and thankful to the jury for holding PacifiCorp accountable for what happened on Labor Day 2020 — something it will never do itself," as reported by NBC News.

As the ashes settle, PacifiCorp is eyeing the prospect of post-verdict rulings and insurance payouts to reduce its own out-of-pocket costs to just shy of $80 million. "The 2020 wildfires were undeniably tragic," said PacifiCorp.  "PacifiCorp has settled and will continue to settle all reasonable claims for actual damages under Oregon law. ... The growing threat of wildfires to communities and businesses is bigger than any one company or industry." The 2020 blazes left a ghastly mark on Oregon's history, claiming nine lives, torching beyond 1,875 square miles, and reducing over 5,000 structures to rubble.

Amidst the legal turmoil, previous judgments have already found PacifiCorp culpable of negligence. Fire officials warned of the risk, urging the utility to cut power; however, their pleas were ignored, and power lines dangled precariously as a fount of destruction. Last June, a jury found the company responsible for the fires, slapping it with around $90 million in damages to be paid out to 17 homeowner. A broader class of plaintiffs, potentially encompassing owners of some 2,500 properties, might soon see their day in court with additional trials set for February and April.

PacifiCorp's costs may increase as legal proceedings reveal the impact of the changing climate and the responsibilities utility companies bear. The 2020 wildfire season's full financial impact on PacifiCorp is yet uncertain, but the jury's message is evident: neglecting precautionary measures in the face of imminent danger will have consequences.
