As Oregon reels from the impact of severe winter storms and widespread power outages, SNAP recipients who've seen their food supplies spoiled have a beacon of hope: they are eligible for replacement benefits from the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS). A rule not widely known but which could provide crucial relief as many grapple with disrupted daily lives and the stress of restocking essential supplies.
According to Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon, individuals relying on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program have a ten-day window to request these additional funds after losing food due to the crisis, Sarah Weber-Ogden, Co-Executive Director at Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon, stressed the urgency, "Many Oregonians are in crisis right now, and it’s crucial that vulnerable households have the support they need," households already facing hardship don't need the added burden of wondering where their next meal will come from.
The process to claim the reimbursement is straightforward: SNAP users must reach out to ODHS within ten days of their food loss, whether by email, phone, or in-person, and submit a detailed list of the lost items along with their estimated cost.
Moreover, KTVZ reported that the maximum reimbursement would match the regular monthly benefit amount for eligible households, this means no individual will receive more than their usual monthly SNAP allotment, ensuring fairness and keeping within the program's stipulated limits while offering some cushion against the storm's aftermath.
