Oregon has rolled out its preliminary roster of presidential contenders vying for the hearts and votes of its constituents. LaVonne Griffin-Valade, the Secretary of State, announced the list of candidates set to appear on the May primary ballots. The line-up includes familiar faces like former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, among others, and sparks a prelude to the crucial decision Oregonians will make in the upcoming months.

The Republicans' ballot will feature Trump, who is fresh off a win from the Iowa caucuses, alongside Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida and Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, according to Oregon Live. On the Democrats' side, President Biden is expected to face off against U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota and self-help guru Marianne Williamson. The preliminary list of candidates, however, could still shift before voters hit the polls on May 21.

In Disparate attempts to reshape the ballot landscape, a national nonprofit, Free Speech for People, aimed to strike Trump's name from contention in Oregon. They cited his involvement in the January 6th insurrection, but were held at bay as Griffin-Valade said she lacked the authority to affect the ballot based on those claims, as detailed by Oregon Capital Chronicle. The Oregon Supreme Court declined to hear the challenge, deferring to an upcoming U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the matter.

Meanwhile, the green light has been granted to the eligible Oregon voters—encouraged to visit Oregonvotes.gov to ensure their registration details are correct and affiliations aligned with their desired primary. "The 2024 Primary Election is just four months away," emphasized Griffin-Valade, urging Oregonians to prepare, as reported by KTVZ. Yet, voters unaffiliated or aligned with minor parties won't have the opportunity to weigh in on the Republican or Democratic hopefuls in this stage of the election cycle.

The chessboard of primary politics doesn't stand still for long, as evidenced by the recent departures from the race including Ohio businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson. Griffin-Valade's office reserves the right to revise the list post the March 12 filing deadline, potentially removing any candidates who suspend their campaigns or bow out. True to form, the political dance continues, with New Hampshire poised for its own primary spotlight next Tuesday.
