Customers are being urged to immediately stop using a series of upholstered beds sold at popular retail outlets including Walmart, Wayfair, and Overstock after more than 580,000 units have been recalled due to serious safety concerns. According to a report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, these beds sold by Home Design are known to break or collapse, posing a risk of injury.

Thus far, Home Design has received 128 reports of incidents where beds have either broken, sagged or collapsed, leading to at least 36 injuries. The recall is to comprehensively include several models and sizes of low-profile standard and platform beds, the details of which can be found on Home Design's website and the CPSC's recall notice. In a statement obtained by the Chicago Tribune, both the CPSC and Home Design are advising consumers with these beds to immediately cease using them and contact the company for free replacement parts.

The affected models span a range of part numbers including 80002, 80032, 80055, 80071, and 80053, encompassing various colors and designed either to be used with or without a box spring. Some of the models affected are specifically designed without the need for a box spring, such as the platform beds, which include part number 80053 that uniquely lacks a center support leg.

Despite the range in design, all these models share the potential fault that has led to injuries. To swiftly rectify the situation, Home Design is providing customers with a free repair kit. Impacted customers will need to directly email Home Design with photos of the bed or proof of purchase, as well as the headboard's "law label," as per the CPSC's instructions. All beds involved in the recall were manufactured in Malaysia and sold between July 2018 and November 2023, with prices ranging from approximately $100 to $300, according to a CBS News report.

Home Design beds were widely available in the U.S. and Canada, with nearly 527,000 and 56,000 units respectively being recalled in those markets. Further information on the recall, including a detailed list of impacted models and customer service contact information, is accessible on both the CPSC's and Home Design's official websites for proactive consumer reference and action.
