A brazen stabbing at a Cumberland Farms gas station in Palm Springs, Florida was interrupted by a quick-thinking good Samaritan, who subdued a knife-wielding suspect as he attacked a victim on New Year's Day. Jose Miranda, 43, was arrested and is now facing an attempted murder charge after repeatedly stabbing a man who, according to police, he did not appear to know prior to the attack.
The violence erupted at the Cumberland Farms located along Military Trail, where the victim, identified as Enrique Velazquez, was ambushed from behind. A 61-year-old man, Lynn Segebart of West Palm Beach, witnessed the attack and immediately intervened. "As they were tussling they were kinda like halfway on the ground and such so first thing I did was went for the knife," Segebart told CBS12 News. In a grueling struggle, Segebart managed to disarm Miranda, even as the assailant bit him, police said.
Surveillance video from the gas station confirmed the account, showing Segebart stepping in to prevent further harm to Velazquez. As a result of Miranda's aggression, Velazquez sustained multiple stab wounds, necessitating hospitalization in stable condition, and Segebart was left with minor injuries and a bandage on his arm from the bite, according to WPTV.
"I heard this screaming outside for help. So I just went out there to see what I could do probably to help the person," Segebart altruistically recounted. Despite his heroic act, Segebart downplayed his actions, emphasizing his instinct to aid those in dire straits. "Seeing a young man about to lose his life, it was something I didn't want to see," Segebart said in a statement obtained by CBS12 News.
The Cumberland Farms incident has left the local community shaken, but the valorous actions of Segebart, a civilian who put his own safety on the line, have been praised by the authorities as well as the public. At a time when every second counted, it was Segebart's willingness to confront danger that prevented a possible tragedy. Despite the harrowing experience, he maintains that he does not consider himself a hero, simply a man who acted upon a grievous necessity.
