The chill of January typically heralds the festive vibes of Plymouth's Fire & Ice winter festival, but this season's revelers will have to pack up their skates and sleds. The city's much-anticipated event slated for Parkers Lake has been called off due to a winter that's running a fever—unseasonably warm temperatures have failed to produce the sturdy ice needed to underpin the festivities.
In icy contrast to winters past where the chill would reliably sculpt a playground fit for both fire and frost, 2024's mild demeanor leaves behind a treacherous sheen unfit for safe gathering. According to an announcement on the city of Plymouth's official website, the conditions simply are not sufficient to support the event.
But it's not all gloomy skies for local enthusiasts. Some of the festival's traditions endure, undampened by the uncooperative weather. The Fire & Ice Medallion Hunt, which kicked off yesterday, proceeds as intended, along with the Coloring Contest that will have youngsters brandishing crayons come Monday.
