Early Friday morning, a Portland firefighter sustained a leg injury on icy terrain while responding to a blaze in North Portland, and in a separate incident, firefighters contended with ice as they battled an apartment fire in Gresham. According to KPTV, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Portland Fire & Rescue were called to a house fire in the East St. Johns neighborhood where the firefighter's injury occurred as they extended a hose line; meanwhile, a family of three and their two dogs were displaced by the fire, now relying on the Red Cross for assistance, with the cause of the fire still under investigation.
The conditions were so severe during the North Portland incident that the nearest ambulance was 40 minutes away due to the treacherous weather and road conditions, so the injured firefighter was treated at the scene, then transported to the hospital using the Fire Chief’s rig, this struggle had firefighters ensuring that nobody was inside the house while trying to minimize damage to surrounding structures, KOIN reports.
Adding to the firefighting challenges, The Daily Dispatch outlined an incident nearly three hours later at 3:15 a.m., where firefighters in Gresham faced icy conditions at an apartment complex fire on Southeast 187th Avenue. The intense fire affected the first and second floors of a unit, and multiple neighbors were displaced due to smoke damage, the safety of the unit's residents remains unconfirmed as they weren't present at the time and are now being sought by authorities.
Despite hazardous icy conditions that have complicated emergency responses, the professional perseverance of Portland's firefighters under duress points to their unwavering commitment to community safety, making significant efforts to prevent further casualties or structural losses, crews at both fires worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames managing to contain the damage in Gresham to a single unit, with the causes of the fires still pending following investigations.
