A frozen pipe has put Portland's largest sewage pump station, responsible for servicing the downtown area and inner city, under partial service, the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services disclosed on Sunday. The bureau indicated that as of the afternoon, the community had not been affected by the service disruption. Nonetheless, they hinted at the possibility of asking residents to curtail their water usage if repairs extend beyond the anticipated deadline, reported KPTV.
Mitigating the potential crisis, the city's Big Pipe system, an overflow containment feature completed in 2011, is currently in use to store sewage while repair work on the pump station proceeds. According to the Oregon Live, as of Sunday at 4 p.m., the system was 18% full, a necessary precaution given the forecast of rain and snowmelt on Wednesday. Issues have arisen also due to freezing temperatures across Portland and, the power outages it has caused, further threatening sewer service and contributing to backups in homes.
In one instance, a backup generator failure at a pump station situated on East Burnside Street and 105th Avenue resulted in sewage spills into approximately a dozen homes, a situation that was promptly addressed by city crews. Westie Magnusson, plumbing manager of 3 Mountains Plumbing, advised residents on emergency preparedness, stressing the importance of stopping the flow of water in case of burst pipes. He explained to KOIN 6 News, "Know where your whole house shutoff is," whether it be in the garage, crawl space or curbside.
Further demonstrating the gravity of the situation, power outages began affecting the city's main wastewater treatment plant following a collision between a truck and a power pole in North Portland on Friday. The need for swift repairs was underscored, as the Bureau of Environmental Services stated, to ensure continued service. The bureau reassured the public, "Environmental Services has been able to continue service to homes and businesses and prevent sewage overflows to properties and the Willamette River by using the Big Pipe system," in a statement obtained by KPTV. Repairs on the largest sewage pump station are anticipated to be concluded by Tuesday night.
