Atlanta residents will need to keep their umbrellas at hand, as the city gears up for a week soaked in rain and punctuated by thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service. Today's forecast shows a 40 percent chance of rain, with the possibility for sporadic drizzle to continue into the afternoon. The gloomy weather is expected to persist, with a high near 49 degrees and an east wind blowing at a pace of 5 to 10 mph.

As night falls, the patchy drizzle is set to stay around, bringing along patchy fog after 10 pm. The clouds aren't going anywhere either, and temperatures will slightly dip to a low of around 46 degrees. Things are to slightly intensify on Wednesday, with rain likely before 7 am, and showers possibly continuing thereafter. With an east wind maintaining its gentle push, Atlantans might yet have to gear up for new precipitation that could accumulate up to a quarter of an inch.

"Rain showers and a possible thunderstorm are expected Wednesday night," reported the National Weather Service. The low for the evening is forecast to be around 59 degrees, with a southeast wind stirring up the air at approximately 10 mph, and guests may reach up to 15 mph. Weather predictions show an increased chance of precipitation at 80 percent.

The remainder of the week doesn't promise to be any drier. Thursday's lookout has showers and probable thunderstorms with a high of 68 degrees and a continuous south wind. Residents should brace for the chance of rain to rise significantly to 90 percent. The same odds are forecast to persist into the evening, with a consistent low around 60 degrees.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Friday's forecast offers a slight reprieve with a reduced 50 percent chance of showers. Nonetheless, Saturday ramps up again to a 90 percent chance of rain accompanied by potential thunderstorms. A little break in the clouds is anticipated for Sunday, with partly sunny skies and a high near 56. As Monday rolls around, the sun is expected to make an appreciated appearance with a high reaching up to 52 degrees.
