Miami's streets turned into dangerous playgrounds over the holiday weekend, as new videos revealed reckless drivers taking over multiple intersections, leaving tire marks and mayhem in their wake. CBS News Miami released footage showing crowds of onlookers as cars performed stunts such as "donuts," igniting fireworks, and even setting the roads ablaze with gasoline-fueled fires. In one incident at N.W. 17th Avenue and 95th St., a fire erupted as police units hurriedly responded to the scene, according to CBS News Miami.
Residents expressed concern for public safety, with one anonymous neighbor communicating the fear that these acts pose a significant risk to everyone, from children to the elderly. Former Miami Police Jorge Colina warned that those involved in, or even just observing, these dangerous stunts are to hold themselves accountable. "You can be charged with a first-degree misdemeanor and you can be fined up to $1,000. You can have your license revoked and you can have your vehicle impounded," Colina told CBS News Miami.
NBC6's coverage highlighted another intersection takeover in front of a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue station, underscoring the disregard for the critical services these facilities provide. "Any attempt to interfere with emergency service response poses a high risk to the well-being of our community in situations where minutes can make the difference between life and death," Miami-Dade Fire Rescue told NBC6. Further capturing the chaos, another video showed a red Dodge Challenger slamming into a car while executing a donut at an intersection take over.
The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) has taken notice of the uptick in these dangerous acts. "Our Homeland Security Bureau detectives are investigating the incident to identify the individuals responsible," MDPD Detective Luis Sierra confirmed to NBC6. In 2023, street racing and intersection takeovers led to a series of arrests across Miami-Dade and Broward counties, with authorities now intensifying efforts to crack down on the illegal activities that threaten public safety and disrupt county services.
This rise in reckless escapades on the streets comes despite harsher penalties established under a 2022 state law that outlawed participating in a range of dangerous driving activities including street racing, donuts, and drifting. These infractions bear consequences as severe as jail time, major fines, and the possibility of a revoked license. MDPD is asking anyone with information about the recent takeovers to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS, hoping to prevent future occurrences from endangering the community.
