San Antonio's fire department has a new interim leader at the helm, as City Manager Erik Walsh just named veteran firefighter Christopher Monestier the acting Fire Chief, and Valerie Frausto as his second-in-command. Effective as of today, these appointments come at a critical time when the city continues relying on its fire service for vital emergency responses and community safety.
Monestier, who boasts over 30 years of experience with the San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD), steps into the role after serving as Deputy Fire Chief since 2020, his career also includes stints as Division Chief, Assistant Chief, and Fire Marshal, according to FOX San Antonio. "I know Chris well and he is a strong leader who is well respected within and outside the Department," Walsh said, expressing his trust in Monestier to lead SAFD in their ongoing mission to deliver "excellent" critical life-saving services across the city.
Valerie Frausto, rising to Interim Deputy Fire Chief over Administrative Services, brings 23 years to the table, her background decorated with roles such as Chief of Communications, and Assistant Chief over Employee Wellness and Recruitment which doubly confirms the leadership strength at SAFD's disposal. A native to the city, Frausto holds a Bachelor’s in Fire Administration from Texas A&M San Antonio and recently celebrated her marriage, as reported by the City's official news release.
These interim appointments serve as placeholders while city officials move to post the permanent Fire Chief position by the end of February, Walsh conveyed the duo's adequate readiness and experience to pilot the SAFD reinforcing the city's commitment to safeguarding its inhabitants with proficient emergency support systems.
