San Diego is ramping up its efforts to tackle the housing affordability crisis with the groundbreaking of the new Vista Lane Affordable Apartments in San Ysidro — a move heralded as a fast track success thanks to the city's innovative permitting program. The new community features 100 units designed to provide homes for low-income families, and of these, a number have been tailored to support individuals with disabilities; fifteen units are dedicated to people with developmental issues, while 10 units will be ADA compliant, including four tailored for residents with hearing or visual impairments.
The project, now under construction, is a direct fruit of San Diego's push to get residents into affordable housing quicker and more efficiently. "Nearly a year ago, moments before delivering my 2023 State of the City address, I signed an executive order requiring permits for 100% affordable housing projects to be reviewed within 30 days," the Mayor said, according to a recent InsideSD article. Following this legislative maneuver, the Development Services Department instituted the Affordable Housing Permit Now program, which got the ball rolling for Vista Lane in half the time promised.
Expressing gratitude towards the department, the mayor added, "I want to thank the City’s Development Services team for not only accepting my challenge and creating this program, but for then exceeding expectations and getting projects reviewed in less than 15 days in many cases" as per the statement given by InsideSD. He also praised the development team behind Vista Lane, which includes names like Mirka Investments, C&S Construction Services, Martinez + Cutri Urban Studio Corporation, and Hyder Property Management Professionals for their unwavering efforts to combat the housing crunch.
Slated for completion later this year, Vista Lane is poised to serve as a testament to the power of collaboration between the City of San Diego and developers to create real solutions to the housing affordability dilemma. The mayor underscored the urgency of this task, remarking that "addressing our housing shortage as quickly as possible is key to bringing down rents so San Diegans can spend their hard-earned dollars on other life essentials."
