San Francisco's Fillmore district catches a break as Mayor London N. Breed confirms Safeway will keep its Webster Street location open till early next year. The extension comes in time, as discussions between city officials, the grocery giant, and Align Real Estate stretch to accommodate the neighborhood's needs. The store, a cornerstone for local seniors and families, was slated for closure following its sale to the real estate firm.
The talks, led by Mayor Breed, have yielded a temporary lifeline for a store that does more than just sell groceries - it's a gathering place, a community hub, especially for the Fillmore's older residents. According to San Francisco's official news, Safeway's pause on closing allows for a smoother transition as city planners and Align Real Estate sketch out plans for the site, which could include housing and a shiny new grocery store.
Mayor Breed praised Safeway's cooperation, stating, "The Webster Street Safeway is more than a grocery store - it serves as a space that brings together and builds community for the Fillmore neighborhood, home to many senior citizens and families." Public safety concerns in the area have prompted additional police resources, directed by Mayor Breed, to attempt to ensure continued tranquility leading up to the store's eventual closure.
After initial announcements of the store's closure set the stage for a community uproar, Safeway agreed to delay the end game till January 2025. "We have decided to extend the closing date to January 2025 to give the community and the City more time to establish a transition plan," Safeway elaborated on their commitment to the neighborhood. Despite the looming closure, Safeway has promised to keep up with grocery delivery services and aid customers in transferring prescriptions to alternative locations.
