A Santa Clara man is facing murder charges after police discovered him bloodied next to the body of his dead wife. The unsettling scene unfolded when Liren Chen, 27, was found in his home appearing visibly distressed, with his hands airborne and a vacant gaze etched across his face. Authorities allege that the man's wife suffered fatal blunt force trauma to her head.

Responding to a welfare check on January 16, prompted by an acquaintance who voiced concern over Chen's wellbeing, Santa Clara officers made a grim discovery. The acquaintance had noticed Chen through a window, unnervingly stationary and unresponsive to calls or knocks at the door, according to a report from the District Attorney's office. Officers entered the residence to find the macabre aftermath of what has now been labeled as a case of domestic homicide.

Now in police custody, Chen has been charged with murder. Pending his recovery, as he is currently hospitalized, an arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. this afternoon at the Hall of Justice in San Jose. An earlier arraignment date had been postponed.

While statistics show a decrease in domestic violence deaths in the county, District Attorney Jeff Rosen highlights a worrying trend: the number of domestic violence-related 911 calls is on the rise. "Domestic violence deaths have been falling in our county, but that does not measure the depth and destructiveness of the violence," Rosen stated, urging those experiencing abuse to contact local law enforcement, according to the same district attorney's news release.
