The tragic mystery of a Sunrise teacher found deceased near the Florida Turnpike has left her family desperately seeking answers. Shakira Shanay Mozie, 34, known affectionately as Kira, was last seen leaving a holiday party in West Park on Christmas Eve, never arriving back home to Tamarac. Her remains were discovered along the highway, with more questions than answers surrounding the events leading to her untimely death.
As seen from the outcry of her relatives, Mozie's death has caused a ripple of sorrow through both her family and the community she served. "I'll never, ever forget that call," Mozie's great aunt Connie Smith-Lindsey told NBC6. She continued, "Something sinister, evil, devastating, selfish, narcissistic happened between the Christmas party and the Florida Turnpike."
Mozie's boyfriend has come under suspicion, after allegations from the family suggest he has been uncooperative with the investigation, reports from Local 10 News indicate. Despite the suspicions, no arrests have been reported as of yet.
Mozie was a dedicated teacher assistant at Discovery Elementary School and took on numerous roles beyond her formal position. In addition to her educational work, she provided security, tutored, and volunteered as a cheerleading coach. "She poured into students who would not have passed important tests had it not been for her love of education," Smith-Lindsey said in a statement obtained by NBC6. The impact of her death stretches far beyond her immediate family, leaving a hole in a community of students who benefited from her passionate investment in their futures.
As the investigation continues, both law enforcement and those who knew Mozie best are calling for anyone with information to come forward. Details surrounding the incident remain scarce, with the Broward County Sheriff's office declining to release further information at this time. However, the widespread grief is palpable, with many tributes expressing it was an honor to know and work with the vibrant individual Mozie was. "My niece's life and legacy will be more and greater than just what happened to her on the side of the street," Smith-Lindsey emphasized in her interview with NBC6.
Those with any information regarding the case are urged to contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS, hoping to finally provide some closure to a grieving family and community.
