A man wanted for a fatal stabbing on Houston's METRORail was apprehended Wednesday night after a tense standoff at a local church, say Houston Police. The Heights church became the center of an intense confrontation when the suspect, after being spotted by Metro Police and Harris County Pct. 1 constables, dashed into the sanctuary.
Near E 15th Street on Heights Boulevard, the man, unidentified but believed to be in his mid-30s, was confronted by law enforcement and fled into The Church at 1548 Heights. According to Houston Chronicle, he was found holed up in a third-floor office there. After about 90 minutes to two hours, he was in custody, having earlier threatened to leap from a window.
The standoff began just after 8 p.m., with additional officers promptly responding to the scene. "The man had a history with the church," stated HPD Lt. Larry Crowson in the Houston Chronicle. However, the specifics of the suspect's past incidents or his reasons for repeatedly returning to the church remain unclear.
Previously, on Sunday, authorities said that the suspect was embroiled in a physical altercation aboard a Red Line train at the Downtown Transit Center, which led to a 55-year-old man being stabbed to death. The suspect, after the stabbing, managed to flee. A mental evaluation is being considered for the suspect, said Lt. Larry Crowson.
The Houston Police Department, in the efforts to nab the individual, had released surveillance footage showing clear images of the suspect. The community was called upon with the hope that someone might recognize him. These images led to the sequence of events that culminated in Wednesday's standoff.
Details of the MetroRail incident were sparse, but the deadly encounter was a brutal one, with the victim having bled out on the train, as reported by KHOU.
