
A spree of armed robberies and vehicular hijackings in Chicago this month has led to the arrest of a 16-year-old male juvenile, law enforcement authorities announced. The teenager faces a slew of felony charges including aggravated vehicular hijacking and armed robbery with a firearm, as reported in an official Chicago Police Department release.
Arrested on January 23, 2024, in the 5200 block of S. Peoria St., the unidentified minor was nabbed by members of the Chicago Police Department and the Vehicular Hijacking Task Force. Finding themselves on the wrong end of a gun, victims ranging in age from 22 to 42 were assaulted by the youth in separate incidents that shook communities across the city.
The teen is charged with four counts of felony vehicular hijacking with a firearm, matching the number of the felony counts of armed robbery with a firearm. Additionally, authorities have slapped the youthful offender with one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a person under 21.
According to the CPD report, locations of the alarming crime spree include the 5200 block of S. Green St. and the 5500 block of S. Wells St., where residents, having faced the barrel of a gun and the threat of losing their vehicles, have seen peace shattered in their communities. During the arrest of the young suspect, no further details were disclosed to the public.
The incidents date back to January 19, with the most recent transpiring just days ago, indicating a rapid and brazen pattern of criminal activity. The offender, whose name has not been released due to his juvenile status, is currently in custody and will face the consequences of the charges in juvenile court.
