A young gunman's dine-and-dash turned crash-and-arrest drama unfolded in Belmont Cragin Monday night when a 17-year-old tried to quickly alight with ill-gotten gains from a Mexican restaurant, only to end up in handcuffs after a traffic accident, Chicago police reported. The would-be robber, wielding a firearm, burst into an eatery at the 5400 block of West Belmont Avenue around 9:35 p.m., demanding cash, according to ABC 7 Chicago.
The teen's plan took a turn south when an individual at the restaurant, licensed to carry concealed, confronted the armed assailant and discharged their weapon in an attempt to hopefully subdue him. Although the shots fired missed their target, they left visible reminders of the altercation in the form of bullet holes punctuating the restaurant's window pane. Post-haste, the teen scampered out of the establishment and fled in a black SUV, police said.
The SUV slammed into a traffic snarl-up in the 2800 block of North Long Avenue, where the teen was subsequently apprehended by responding officers. The Chicago Police Department confirmed that a weapon was recovered at the scene of the crash, as per ABC 7 Chicago.
In the chaotic aftermath, the teen suspect was to have suffered a graze wound and taken to Community First Hospital where he was listed in fair condition, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. No charges had been formerly filed at the time of the report. Area Five Detectives are actively piecing together the events of the night.
