A devastating church fire in northeast Portland claimed the lives of two women in the early hours last Sunday, as flames tore through the building and spread to an adjacent home. Portland Fire & Rescue crews, responding to a 911 call around 4:12 a.m. on the 2800 block of NE 62nd Ave, fought to contain the blaze which had engulfed both the church and the nearby residence, as reported by KPTV.
The race against time became a perilous mission for firefighters attempting entry into the burning church, where occupants were rumored to be trapped, the desperate measures turned futile as the crew faced a firestorm that pushed them to the brink and they struggled to make their way to the second story but were repelled by the intense inferno that did not relent its furious grip on the structure, according to KTVZ. The two-story residence where the initial emergency call originated remained standing, its inhabitants having escaped the threat unscathed.
It was confirmed by fire authorities that the victims, both females in their mid-70s, perished inside the church, their sanctuary turned sepulcher, as the fire raged through the night. While parts of the church succumbed to the flames and collapsed, firefighters managed to bring the inferno under control near 5:50 a.m., and commenced their grim task to unveil the fate of those claimed by the blaze, as KPTV documented.
Amid the smoking ruins and the heartache of loss, investigators keep searching for the cause of the fire, while the congregation and community are left to ponder the fragility of life and the indiscriminate nature of tragedy, the fire's origin remains a pending question as investigations continue, and the affected families, their lives upended and forever anchored to this moment of calamity, begin the arduous journey through grief and recovery as reported by KTVZ.
