Tragedy struck in Northeast Portland when a downed power line fell upon a car, resulting in the deaths of three individuals on Wednesday morning. KATU News reported that a branch, weakened perhaps by the relentless winter, crashed into a power line which then descended upon a vehicle, instantly ending the lives of two adults and a teenager. In the aftermath, faint hope persisted as a two-year-old child was found to have miraculously survived and quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment.
As details on the devastating incident continued to emerge, it was revealed that the fatalities were all adults, as initially, there were conflicting reports about the age of the victims. KGW News noted the precise moment of emergency crews being dispatched to the site on Northeast Siskiyou Street near 122nd Avenue was just before noon, as pertained in dispatch logs. The electrocution was the cause of death, as the powerful current from the power lines surged through the vehicle, leaving no chance for the occupants.
The incident on Northeast Siskiyou Street is among a troubling spate of winter-related fatalities in the Portland metro area, with at least 10 lives claimed since Friday. Multnomah County authorities have implicated hypothermia as the culprit in four deaths, while an investigation remains ongoing in the death of a Tigard resident under similar circumstances. Moreover, a gruesome event occurred over the weekend when a tree, ostensibly toppled by potent winds, obliterated a household RV in Southeast Portland, igniting a fire and causing one fatality and injuring another, contributing to this harrowing period.
In a closely related event, AOL News reported another individual was killed in Lake Oswego when a tree, not strong enough to withstand the power of the winds, fell upon their residence on Saturday morning. Additionally, fire investigators are to thoroughly probe the involvement of a generator in the deaths of two women during an early Sunday morning fire at a Northeast Portland church.
As the Portland community reels from these events, questions are likely to surface about the resilience of city infrastructure against such severe weather conditions, and whether enough is genuinely being done to ensure the safety of its residents against the whims of the indifferent climate.
