Tragedy struck late Friday night in the Belle Glade area of Palm Beach County when a car carrying two children collided with a tractor-trailer, sending the young passengers to the hospital via TraumaHawk. The Palm Beach County Rescue and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office confirmed the incident, which involved four injuries in total. WPTV reported that emergency units responded to the scene on State Road 80, south of the JW Corbett Wildlife Management area around 11:08 p.m.
The victims included a 14-year-old girl and a 10-year old boy who were in a 2021 Toyota Corolla driven by a family member. According to a crash report by the PBSO obtained by WFLX, a 1997 Freightliner operated by a 62-year-old Belle Glade woman was turning onto the roadway just as the Corolla approached. The car impacted the rear side of the tractor-trailer's fifth axle.
Both children were airlifted in serious condition to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach. Their driver, the 41-year-old family member from Lehigh Acres, received minor injuries and was taken by ground to a hospital. The truck driver involved in the crash did not sustain any injuries, as mentioned in both the WPTV article and by authorities.
"A truck driver said she saw the Corolla approaching from a distance as her vehicle turned into the path of the car," the PBSO crash report detailed, as per WFLX.
