The desert roads of Apache Junction became scenes of tragedy this week, with at least one person pronounced dead after a collision on State Route 88, while a separate incident claimed the life of a bicyclist after a vehicular impact. According to AZFamily, the crash that prompted road closures occurred south of Tepee Street, reopening by Thursday morning after investigations and clear-up operations.
The Apache Junction police remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the crash, not disclosing immediately to the public how many lives the accident claimed. Travelers along the North Apache Trail were forced to navigate diversions, with the thoroughfare shut down from Tepee Street to Idaho Road, dire moments casting shadows over the otherwise tranquil trails of Apache Junction.
Meanwhile, a separate but equally harrowing narrative unfolded on the same roadway, where a car struck and killed a bicyclist. The 12 News reported that officials confirmed the fatality took place near Tomahawk Road on Apache Trail. The unfortunate event led to the closure of both northbound and southbound lanes in the crash vicinity, with no immediate timeline for reopening.
The identity of the bicyclist was kept under wraps at the time of reporting, and as Apache Junction Police Department works through the wreckage, they continue to gather pieces – clues left behind in the wake of metal and rubber—and of a life taken too soon.
