A duo charged in the brutal beating of a Pinal County teenager was indicted by a grand jury. Jacob Lee Pennington, 20, and Garrett Bagshaw, 18, face aggravated assault and disorderly conduct charges stemming from the November 18 attack, as reported by the AZ Family.
The assault took place on a desert expanse near Wagon Wheel Road and Quail Trail, just south of Hunt Highway. During the ferocious encounter, Pennington is accused of hitting the 16-year-old victim in the face while spewing racial slurs, then whacking him with his belt. Pinal County deputies revealed that the teenager was restrained by Pennington as others joined in the kicking. A portion of the attack was captured on camera, and Pennington was later snagged at his home in Gilbert. Subsequently, Bagshaw was collared in Mesa as the second suspect.
The Pinal County Sheriff's Office continues its investigation to pinpoint additional suspects. "If you had involvement in this case, my advice to you is turn yourself in now because we will find you," Sheriff Mark Lamb stated in a social media video, following Bagshaw's arrest, as reported by the AZ Family.
This violence surge has triggered multiple arrests by Valley police departments. In a linked incident, two adults and two teens were arrested for their alleged roles in an August attack in a Gilbert In-N-Out parking lot. The group associated with the assault also includes the "Gilbert Goons," an entity Pennington has admitted ties to, indicating a broader chain of teen violence across the East Valley. Additionally, the Gilbert Police have made an appeal for public assistance in resolving nine active teen assault investigations.
The escalation in teen violence garnered increased attention after the death of 16-year-old Preston Lord, who was attacked following a Halloween party in Queen Creek last October. His stepmother's heartfelt appeal for justice was presented at a Chandler City Council meeting, as the community grapples with this disturbing pattern of violence among its youth.
